18 of 19 people found the following review helpful Fantastic Deal!!!, This review is from: DeLorme Map Library Subscription Card for Topo USA 8.0 and Earthmate PN Series GPS Navigators (Electronics) I ordered the Map Library along with my PN-40 unit. This map library was one of the deal-makers that led to my buying the DeLorme GPSr. I mainly use the aerial images and the 1:24k topo quads. The color images for my area look to have been taken a couple of years ago, while the b&w's look about 6-7 years old. This will vary by geographic area. You can layer the maps in any order, and view hybrids with the Topo 7 data over the aerial (or whichever view you choose). This annual subscription is just an unbelievable deal. The downloads I've made already would cost hundreds (going on thousands) of dollars if I bought the maps individually. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful The best value in mapping software, bar none!, By This review is from: DeLorme Map Library Subscription Card for Topo USA 8.0 and Earthmate PN Series GPS Navigators (Electronics) I have used DeLorme TopoUSA products for going on a decade now, so I have lots of experience with it from it's earlier days as a pioneering product in the consumer digital mapping field. Once I "got the hang of it", it's been an indispensable tool in the backcountry. Hook a GPS to the laptop, load up the DeLorme mapping software, and you get a dot on the map at the precise location you are at. During my backcountry adventures, I've found jeep trails using DeLorme mapping software that I couldn't even see on the ground due to terrain conditions, nighttime, etc. The added benefit of handheld mapping GPS units from DeLorme has only made their mapping products even more useful. Maps downloaded through this subscription can also be downloaded into DeLorme's handheld gps units. This subscription to the DeLorme download service for added 7.5 minute USGA topo maps, charts, aerial, and satellite photography has been a wonderful addition to the product. I've been using it since... This review is from: DeLorme Map Library Subscription Card for Topo USA 8.0 and Earthmate PN Series GPS Navigators (Electronics) A great idea: unlimited download of USGS Topo Qads, NOAA nautical charts, aerial imagery. And everything will be visible on the computer screen as well as on the handheld GPS unit. The problem is: Delorme makes every effort to prevent the valued customer from downloading their precious data. The selection process of maps to download is slow and tedious through their "flagship" software "TopUSA 8". Once after dozends of clicks the maximum download size of about 50 MB is selected (corresponding to a 1000sqm area), one has to wait 20 minutes for an email with a download link to arrive. The download itself is painstakingly slow and crashes half of the time (this does not have to do with my connection speed). So be prepared to spend days and days clicking through menues and waiting and frustrating if you want to get some of your money's worth on this product... |

172 of 177 people found the following review helpful Some initial problems; now mostly fixed!, By This review is from: Garmin GPSMAP 62St Handheld GPS Navigator (Electronics) UPDATE September 7 2010. The issues resolved below are solved by release 2.50 of the 62st firmware. I have no trouble recommending this unit at this point!I purchased the 62st recently and took it out for a 9 mile geocaching adventure. While I like the unit very much in general, it has one major problem. Like any hiking GPS, the 62st will record your track as you hike, letting you upload it to your computer when you return home. This is very useful for keeping track of your adventures. The accuracy of the 62st's GPS, combined with its barometric altimeter, lets you accurately record your track for later use. Sadly what I discovered is that on the 62st simply pressing buttons on the GPS interferes with the barometric altimeter. Pressing even a single button on the GPS can result in spikes in the recorded data of 30 feet or more! On my first test hike, my 62st GPS said that I had climbed more than 8000 vertical feet, while the other GPSes carried by my... With it, I purchased the MapSource City Navigator DVDs for NorthAmerica/Mexico (2011.1 NT) and Europe (2012.NT), a DaneElec 4 GB microSD card, and a Colorado Series Bike Mount (#11023). I purchased the 62S & mount from DigitalOasis & the card plus Software from GPScity. Both companies shipped promptly. The 62S has v2.8 software. My previous two GPSs are the GPSmap76 (purchased 2001) and the Edge 305 bike GPS (purchased 2009). I have used the 76S successfully with Bluechart software for kayaking in the Pacific NW, and with Garmin MetroGuide 2007 for biking around WA State. I give the 76S a 4/5 rating - a great device, which has saved me many times out in the fog. The 305 I give only 3/5 rating - too expensive for what it is (essentially a fancy bike computer, without maps). Also, the 305 suffers from vibration and will turn off when my bike hits a bump. I am an Electrical Engineer who writes control software for a... Read more 43 of 43 people found the following review helpful All-around great GPS, Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?) This review is from: Garmin GPSMAP 62S Handheld GPS Navigator (Electronics) I absolutely love this GPS. I've used a Garmin Oregon 300, Garmin Etrex and vista, Garmin gpsmap 60Csx and a Garmin Rino 530 and this GPS is better than all of them. The accuracy is great on this, usually around 9 ft regardless of whether or not I'm under tree cover or near large metal objects. The unit is also incredibly sensitive and does a good job measuring speed whether walking (slow pace to fast pace), biking, or driving in the car. The screen is very easy to see in direct, bright sunlight or at night. The paperless geocaching is amazing. So far, I have mostly used it for geocaching and it generally takes me directly to the cache. There is a menu bar that allows you to add shortcuts you easily jump to by using the quit and page keys, which makes switching from map to compass, to geocaches to elevation plot extremely easy, especially while riding a bicycle. I had trouble navigating the touch-screen oregon on my bike, and this gpsmap 62s is a breeze. The only issue I... Read more |

This review is from: Garmin eTrex 30 Worldwide Handheld GPS Navigator (Electronics) My 30 arrived a few hours ago.As you read this review, note that Rocker refers to what Garmin has now renamed the Thumb Stick. Pros: o The on-screen keyboard is much better designed than the old eTrex (and this issue was important enough to me to pay for a 450 last year): .....o Stays in upper case (hallelujah) rather than, with the old eTrex, the first alpha triggering the on-screen keyboard to change to lower case and special characters, which then necessitated navigating to the shift character to restore the keyboard to upper case and numbers. .....o DONE is easier to access as are cursor left and cursor right. .....o Can use the Zoom keys (top left side of GPS) to switch between the three keyboards: alpha and numbers, special characters; numbers. o The display is nice and crisp. o Can load maps to internal memory without using an SD card (56MB of maps tested leaves 1.68GB of internal memory)... Read more 20 of 20 people found the following review helpful Overall much improved but lost a bit in the process, This review is from: Garmin eTrex 20 Worldwide Handheld GPS Navigator (Electronics) Presumably atypically I use eTrex units nearly exclusively for road navigation and often calculate long routes.Previously I used a Legend CX extensively and it's showing its age. I toyed with buying a Nuvi but don't care for the design for subjective reasons such as lack of configurability and water resistance, touchscreen, doesn't work as well on my motorcycle, etc.. The Legend CX would routinely take several minutes to calculate long routes in addition to slow map `drawing' times and I'm pleased to note Garmin improved calculating/processing speed significantly. I've been running the two side by side for quite some time now and the 20 processes routes in roughly 1/3 the time (still noticeably slower than the Nuvis I've used). Additionally the map drawing time is much reduced, and to my eyes the map layout/display is improved - for one thing the background is more white than yellow and easier to read. Satellite acquisition and retention is also much... That has changed. It's now available, and I have it within arm's reach as I'm typing this.I liked the features listed for the eTrex 20, and awaited the late September release date before upgrading from my old Magellan handheld GPS. The eTrex 20 has so far proven to be everything it was advertised to be - lightweight, easy to use, and with a sensitive receiver. One of the factors that motivated me to upgrade was how fast the Garmins that my wife and son have were to lock on to the satellites, versus how much longer it took the old Magellan - this one took less than a minute to find, lock-on, and determine position, while the older unit would still have been searching for satellites. One of the first things I noticed when using the eTrex 20, was the number of satellites it tracked. This new eTrex series has incorporated the Russian GLONASS system, along with the... Read more |
